Improves Navaho Life. 
Parts of the Navaho Reservation in Arizona can be extremely desolate. Located in the desert, the small, run-down houses surrounded by brown sand and sparse vegetation, you may wonder how these people have managed to survive their environment for so many years. What you probably don't know is that 40% of those living on the reservation have no access to clean, safe water. They have no potable water to drink, none to use for sanitary purposes, nothing to use to wash their dishes and laundry, no way to irrigate gardens and crops, and a lack of the necessary liquid to even sustain their livestock. It has been an almost impossible situation for decades.To solve the problem, many of the population are forced to travel long distances each day to procure fresh water from a communal well. The contamination of the ground water just doesn't allow them to use water from areas which are closer to their homes. Fortunately, representatives of the US Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation along with scientists from the University of Arizona have joined together on a project designed to provide cheap, off-the-grid water for areas which historically haven't had any.Ads by Google.These agencies are at work on the development of technology that will not only provide for the daily clean water needs of residents, but also as a system people can use to provide a model for other areas to copy and utilize as needed. Using solar heat and electricity, the system does not need a grid to desalinate the groundwater. The developing system is so cutting-edge that it inspired a veteran producer to create a documentary about it. The resulting program was written to portray the point of view of the Navaho who are benefiting from the system. Two years of film was compiled which was edited to form the program.

 


Project development was a learning experience for those involved, and the process required on-the-job learning from everyone. So far, only a prototype model has been installed which will produce 1,000 gallons of water per day to be used for livestock. This is much improved from the original prototype goal of producing only 10 gallons of water per day. With the first unit in place, water hauling time for most people will be reduced to between 10 and 15 minutes per round trip from the original 45. People are thrilled with even this amount of respite from this tedious daily chore.
