He wishes to name the new tulip species after the Thai monarch because he is impressed with Thais' overwhelming loyalty to the King.
The loyalty was particularly evident during celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of His Majesty's accession to the throne.

There's a new tulip species called "King Bhumibol". Klaas Koedijk, a Dutch man, had sought and obtained permission to name the tulip after Thailand's beloved monarch, HM the King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The "King Bhumibol" tulip has a creamy yellow flower. Measured with its stem, the tulip stands about 45 centimetres high.

The new species has been developed from the "Prince Claus" species, which is a strain from Judith Leyster.
The "Prince Claus" species is named after HM Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands.
